What Do Electricians Do?

Posted by Breaker Outlet on Jul 8th 2019

Electricity, although not invented by humans, is a natural phenomenon harnessed by us to make our lives more convenient. From air conditioning in the summer to cool our homes to street lights that make it possible for us to drive at night, many of the tasks we do every day rely on electricity. However, electricity doesn’t just run itself like animals in nature. It has to be harnessed, controlled, distributed, and repaired when need be — which is where an electrician comes in.

WHAT IS AN ELECTRICIAN?

An electrician in short is someone who works with electricity and electrical equipment. They specialize in bringing electricity to homes and businesses, which could be as an electrical contractor or as a substation worker. There are many duties for electricians, as  Breaker Outlet will explore below.

WHAT DOES AN ELECTRICIAN DO?

  • Installs and repairs electrical wiring. Electricians are responsible for the electrical wiring that comes in and out of your home. Electricians are the ones who wire every new building, including your home, for power. They also are the ones who repair your electrical wiring when something is wrong.
  • Understands how electricity, breakers, circuits, and switches work. An electrician is around dangerous amounts of electricity every day, and it is imperative that they understand how electricity works. They need to be able to read and interpret circuit diagrams, as well as architectural blueprints, for when they need to install electrical wiring.
  • Performs electrical maintenance. Like all human-made objects and creations, electrical wiring wears out with time. Regular maintenance is required for all electrical components to keep them in good working order.
  • Inspects transformers, circuit breakers, and other electrical parts. Part of performing electrical maintenance involves inspecting electrical equipment and knowing what to look for. After all, when electrical wiring fails, lives could be at risk from uncontrolled power surges or exposed wiring.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical equipment. Once an electrical fault is found, it needs to be repaired expeditiously and safely. Electrical problems can be complicated, and sometimes it can be hard to know exactly what is wrong. Electricians need to be able to troubleshoot electrical problems, using their extensive knowledge of electricity in order to stay safe themselves and to keep others safe. Repairing electrical equipment is a big part of what electricians do.
